Who We Are
Rice University’s commitment to sustainability is reflected through two distinct but complementary entities: the Office of Sustainability and the Rice Sustainability Institute. While both work toward advancing sustainability on campus and beyond, they serve different roles in the university ecosystem.
The Office of Sustainability focuses on campus operations, student engagement, and institutional initiatives that promote environmental stewardship and climate action. It leads efforts such as zero waste programs, energy efficiency projects, and student-led initiatives like EcoReps.
In contrast, the Rice Sustainability Institute is a research-driven hub that connects faculty, students, and external partners to tackle global sustainability challenges through interdisciplinary scholarship and innovation. It supports academic programs, research collaborations, and policy engagement that extend Rice’s impact beyond campus.
