Sustainable Policies and Commitments

Leading by Policy: Rice’s Commitment to Sustainability

At Rice University, sustainability isn’t just a practice—it’s a promise. Through a series of forward-thinking policies and national commitments, Rice has embedded environmental responsibility into the foundation of its operations, academics, and long-term planning.

These policies guide how we build, operate, and grow as a campus community, ensuring that sustainability is not an afterthought, but a core value.

Our Sustainability Policy Framework

  • Rice University Sustainability Policy
This overarching policy outlines Rice’s commitment to integrating sustainability into all aspects of university life—from academics and research to operations and community engagement.

  • Sustainable Facilities Policy
Rice ensures that all new construction and major renovations meet high standards for energy efficiency, water conservation, and environmental performance.

  • Building Temperature Policy
To reduce energy consumption, Rice maintains a campus-wide temperature policy that balances comfort with climate-conscious building operations.

National & Global Commitments

  • Talloires Declaration (1995)
Rice was an early leader in higher education sustainability, becoming a signatory of the Talloires Declaration—a 10-point action plan for integrating sustainability and environmental literacy into teaching, research, and campus operations. Signed by President Malcolm Gillis, this commitment placed Rice among the first wave of universities pledging to become environmentally responsible institutions.

  • American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment
By signing this landmark agreement, Rice signaled its intention to become a carbon-neutral campus, aligning with national efforts to combat climate change through measurable action and accountability.

These policies are more than just words—they’re the framework for a resilient, responsible, and regenerative future at Rice. They empower students, faculty, and staff to take meaningful action and ensure that sustainability remains a shared mission across the university.
