Located on the South side of campus, Will Rice College is home to over 200 students and is the second oldest college on campus. Completed in a mere fifteen months, the 2010 demolition and replacement of Will Rice’s 1955 Wing earned Rice University a LEED Silver award for the addition of a rooftop terrace and many new green elements such as:
- Salvaged and reused clay tiles from the old wing .
- Less square footage allowing for the unused land to be converted to a green space and public, outdoor plaza.
- Double-paned windows with low emissivity glass to keep the summer heat out while still letting light in.
- Minimal need for electric lighting during the day as over 90 percent of the buildings interior receives natural daylight.
- Water efficient bathroom amenities including a dual flush toilet and low-flow showerheads.
- Rooms constructed using paints, adhesives, and sealants with reduced emissions to provide better indoor air quality.
- Motion/infrared detection system to automatically turn off lights in unoccupied rooms.
- Heating and coolings system that follows Rice’s energy policy.
- Front-loading Energy Star washing machines that use less water and energy.
- 54 new bicycle spaces.
