Rice Oceans Club (ROC) is a student organization devoted to spreading awareness and appreciation for marine environments and their conservation. Through education and service activities, ROC aims to engage the Rice student body and the greater Houston community in both local and global efforts to protect ocean ecosystems. They provide resources to Rice students currently pursuing careers in Ocean Science and works to forge connections with grassroots organizations with similar focuses. Past events include a behind the scenes tour of the saltwater aquaria exhibits at the Houston Zoo as well as subsidized tickets to shark research lectures and a humpback whale movie at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. ROC hopes to make future trips to Galveston for beach cleanups, to research conferences in order to hear from the field’s leading experts, and eventually to the coral reefs of the Flower Garden Banks or the Florida Keys to get involved directly as citizen-scientists.
