Known as the greenest dorm, Duncan College houses more than 300 undergraduate students on the North Side of campus and was LEED Gold certified in 2010. As per request of Anne and Charles Duncan, architect Hopkins designed Duncan to be environmentally friendly and had it certified as one of the first LEED Gold Standard buildings in Houston. Green features of the building include:
- Reduced energy and water consumption (at least 25% and 30% respectively).
- Monitoring system that shuts off lights when no motion is detected for 30 minutes.
- Air conditioning that shuts off when windows are opened.
- Rooftop gardens with low-maintenance plants that cut heating/cooling costs.
- Runoff water collection system for reuse
- Pod bathrooms, minimizing construction waste and traffic.
- Dual flushing options to lower water consumption.
- Lack of carpet, a product that when manufactured causes heavy CO2 emission and waste.
- Use of green materials in construction and furnishing.
- Recycling containers located in each floor's elevator bay and in the servery.
